Before 1800 over 50% of white English citizens who arrived in the original 13 colonies that became the USA were indentured servants who could be bought and sold.  

They were treated like slaves but eventually would be freed because they had contracts with their owners for a few years work.  

Unlike Africans who arrived at the same time.
