Aunt Leah, Eleanor Rigby, Senator Mikulski

 poor georgie’s almanack

I have  been in love with Maryland’s Senator Barbara Mikulski.  She has the same height, shape, demeanor and outlook as my mother’s sister Leah.
Aunt Leah, we would ask, how was the drive?  Was there traffic?  Was the scenery nice?

Don’t know, she would answer.  I sat in the back seat and all I saw were tree tops, she would say without a hint of frustration.

Since the Senator’s retirement announcement, the possible original lyrics of Eleanor Rigby have been dancing through my brain.

“Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

“Barbara Mikulski, stood on a box
and still couldn’t be seen
by all the lonely people
ah, the lonely people

“Where do they all come from?
Where do they all belong?

“Barbara Mikulski stood on a box
and finally yelled
Baltimore, Maryland, Baltimore Maryland!
Ah, the lowly people
That’s where they all belong.”

Sad, but possibly true.
